"To me, this is the sound of New York in 1983" says singer / songwriter Edward Russell of his new album. "Artists like
Madonna, Michael Jackson together with producers like Arthur Baker, Nile Rodgers and remixers like Shep Pettibone and
Jellybean. What they were doing in the early 80s still sounds fresh, so I’ve captured that sound - or its essence - and
made an album inspired by that feel.”
Bouncy hip-hop basslines, tight Linn drums, rhythm guitars and the most basic of synths. Throw in some hardcore pop hooks
and layered vocals and you have the 11 tracks that make up ‘Mode’.
"My music has always had an 80s quality. I think it’s something in my voice," says Edward who also cites some British
influences to his work. “I wanted to capture that New York feel but also to take something from the other artists who were
using it. Pet Shop Boys spent their early career in New York and brought that sound back to the UK for their debut album.
And who can deny Prince’s influence over that decade? I’ve even thrown in a little Giorgio Moroder for good measure!”
Lead single ‘Pressure’ certainly owes a little of its inspiration to Paisley Park but what of the other tracks?
'Pressure' is very funky and that sound re-appears a few times, but it's also very pop and melodic, throughout. There's a
song called ‘Miracle’ which has a Latin, mid tempo feel - complete with saxophone solo a little inspired by ‘Careless
Whisper’ and a couple of the songs wouldn’t sound out of place on a Human League album”. But Edward’s favourite song is
the album’s closer, ‘Perfect Match’.
"I wanted to create an anthemic, 80s ballad. Not that Power Rock feel, but the more minimal, electric sound. Songs like
'True Colours', 'Hide & Seek' and 'Live to Tell' still haunt me and 'Perfect Match' captures that spirit”.
"I’ll be releasing ‘Pressure’ a little ahead of the album and the video looks really, really great," confirms Edward.
"There’s a second single called ‘All For You’ on its way and I’m hoping to perform live in both Cardiff and London early
in the new year”.
"With ‘Mode’ I tried to create the music that I want to hear on the radio. I’m very proud of the end result".
New album coming soon….
